Saint Francis of Assisi: Lord, Make Me an Instrument of Your Peace
Saint Francis of Assisi was a man whose life was transformed when he encountered the love of Christ. Born in Assisi, Italy, around 1181 or 1182, Francis grew up with dreams of wealth, adventure, and worldly success. He came from a prosperous family and initially desired a life of honour and recognition.
But God gradually led him in another direction.
Through prayer, suffering, encounters with the poor, and a growing desire to follow Christ, Francis began to understand that true greatness was not found in wealth or status. It was found in loving God and serving others.
❤️ From Wealth to Simplicity
One of the most remarkable aspects of Francis' life was his decision to embrace a life of poverty and simplicity.
He recognized that possessions could easily become obstacles between the human heart and God. Rather than allowing wealth to define him, Francis chose to depend more completely on God's providence.
His life challenges us to ask:
What possesses my heart?
We may not be called to live exactly as Francis did, but we are all called to examine our attachment to money, possessions, recognition, and comfort.
Francis teaches us that having less can sometimes help us appreciate God more.
🤲 Love for the Poor
Francis developed a special love for people who were poor, sick, and rejected by society.
One important turning point in his life was his encounter with a leper. What had once filled him with fear and disgust became an opportunity for love and compassion.
This teaches us something powerful: Christ can be found in the people we are tempted to avoid.
Sometimes we want to serve God in beautiful churches while ignoring the suffering person standing outside our door.
Francis reminds us that authentic love must become visible.
✝️ Following Christ
Francis desired to imitate Jesus—not merely by admiring Him, but by allowing the Gospel to shape his entire life.
He embraced humility, poverty, forgiveness, service, prayer, and love.
His life asks us a difficult but beautiful question:
If I say that I love Christ, can people see that love in the way I live?
Faith is more than words. It becomes real through our actions.
🕊️ An Instrument of Peace
Saint Francis is strongly associated with the call to become instruments of peace.
In a world where people are divided by anger, politics, ethnicity, religion, social status, and personal disagreements, his message remains deeply relevant.
Peace does not begin somewhere far away.
It begins within us.
It begins when we choose forgiveness instead of hatred, understanding instead of condemnation, kindness instead of cruelty, and reconciliation instead of revenge.
We can ask ourselves:
Am I bringing peace into the places where God has placed me?
Do people experience peace when they encounter me?
🌿 His Love for Creation
Francis also had a profound appreciation for God's creation. He saw creation as a gift that points toward the Creator.
He referred to the sun, moon, earth, water, and other creatures with the language of family, famously expressing this spirituality in his Canticle of the Creatures.
His example reminds us not to treat creation carelessly. The earth is not merely something to consume; it is God's gift entrusted to us.
We can honour this lesson through simple actions: avoiding waste, caring for our environment, protecting animals, planting trees, and using God's gifts responsibly.
🌟 The Greatest Lesson of Francis
Perhaps the greatest lesson of Saint Francis is this:
You do not need to be rich, powerful, famous, or important in the eyes of the world to live a great life.
A life becomes great when it is surrendered to God and given in love.
Francis allowed God to transform his ambitions into a mission of service. His life became a testimony that radical simplicity, joyful faith, compassion, and love can speak more loudly than wealth and status.
