Messengers and Protectors of God's People
The Church celebrates the Feast of Saints Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael, Archangels on September 29. These three archangels are named in Sacred Scripture and are presented to us as powerful servants of God who carry out His divine purposes.
Their lives and missions remind us that heaven is not distant from God's people. God sends His angels to serve His plan, strengthen His children, deliver His messages, and protect His people.
The three archangels reveal different aspects of God's work:
Michael — the defender and protector of God's people.
Gabriel — the messenger who announces God's saving plan.
Raphael — the companion and healer who guides and helps God's servants.
Together, they remind us that we are called to stand faithfully, listen attentively, and walk trustfully with God.
Saint Michael: Defender of God's People
The name Michael means, “Who is like God?”
In the Book of Revelation, Michael is presented as the leader of the heavenly host who battles against the dragon. He represents the victory of God's truth over evil.
Saint Michael teaches us that spiritual warfare is real, but our confidence must never be placed in our own strength. Our strength comes from God.
His name itself is a proclamation of humility: Who is like God?
In a world where people can be tempted to place themselves, possessions, power, or success above God, Michael reminds us to put God first.

We must learn to reject evil and remain faithful to God, especially when doing what is right becomes difficult.
Saint Gabriel: Messenger of God's Good News
The name Gabriel is associated with “God is my strength.”
Gabriel is especially known for announcing God's plans.
He appeared to Zechariah to announce the birth of John the Baptist and, most famously, appeared to the Blessed Virgin Mary with the message that she would become the Mother of the Savior.
Mary responded with humility and faith:
“Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord.”
Gabriel's mission reminds us that God still calls people to receive His word and respond with faith.
Sometimes God's message comes through Scripture, prayer, the Church, or through circumstances that invite us to make a faithful choice.
The question is not only, “What is God saying?”
It is also:
“Am I willing to listen and obey?”
Lesson from Saint Gabriel
A faithful servant must have a listening heart. When God calls, our response should be marked by trust rather than fear.
Saint Raphael: Companion and Guide
The name Raphael means “God heals.”
Raphael appears prominently in the Book of Tobit, where he accompanies Tobias on his journey.
He guides, protects, and assists Tobias and his family. Through Raphael's mission, we see God's loving care working through an angelic servant.
Raphael reminds us that we do not always see how God is working in our lives.
There may be moments when we feel lost, afraid, or uncertain about the road ahead. Yet God can provide guidance and help in ways we do not immediately recognize.
Raphael therefore becomes a beautiful reminder to trust God's providence.
Lesson from Saint Raphael
When the road is uncertain, do not assume that God has abandoned you. Continue walking in faith and ask Him for guidance.
What the Three Archangels Teach Us
1. Put God Above Everything — Saint Michael
Michael's name challenges us to ask:
Who is like God?
No achievement, possession, position, or human power can take God's place.
2. Listen for God's Voice — Saint Gabriel
Gabriel reminds us that God speaks and calls.
We must develop hearts that are quiet enough to listen and courageous enough to respond.
3. Trust God's Guidance — Saint Raphael
Raphael reminds us that God accompanies us on our journey.
Even when we cannot see the whole path, we can trust the One who sees the destination.
4. Stand Against Evil
The example of Michael reminds us not to make peace with sin.
Christian courage means choosing truth, righteousness, forgiveness, and holiness even when the easier path is compromise.
5. Become Messengers of Good News
Gabriel's mission challenges us to bring hope to others.
Our words, actions, encouragement, and example can become instruments through which God's love reaches someone who is struggling.
6. Help Others Along the Journey
Raphael reminds us that we are not called to walk only for ourselves.
We can become companions to people who are hurting, confused, discouraged, or searching for God.

Am I placing God above my ambitions, possessions, and personal desires?
What is God asking me to listen to more carefully at this stage of my life?
Am I willing to say “yes” to God even when I do not understand everything?
Where do I need God's protection from temptation or evil?
Who around me needs encouragement, guidance, or compassion?
Do I trust God's providence when I cannot see what lies ahead?
How can I become a messenger of God's love in my family, workplace, parish, or community?

Final Thought
Saint Michael teaches us to stand firm, Saint Gabriel teaches us to listen and proclaim, and Saint Raphael teaches us to trust God's guidance. May we place God first, listen to His voice, and walk faithfully wherever He leads us.
