The Little Way: Doing Small Things with Great Love
The Little Way: Doing Small Things with Great Love
Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus
Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus, lovingly known as the Little Flower, teaches us one of the simplest yet deepest paths to holiness: we do not have to do extraordinary things to become saints; we are called to do ordinary things with extraordinary love.
Thérèse was born in France in 1873 and entered the Carmelite monastery at a young age. Her life was hidden and simple. She did not travel the world preaching, lead armies, or perform great public works. Yet through her humble life of prayer, sacrifice, obedience, and love, she discovered a profound path to God.
She called this path her “Little Way.”
The Little Way of Trust
At the heart of Thérèse's spirituality was a childlike trust in God's love. She understood that we are not saved because we are powerful or perfect, but because God is merciful and loving.
Like a little child who confidently places everything in the hands of a loving parent, Thérèse wanted to place herself completely in God's hands.
This is especially important when we feel weak, discouraged, or unworthy. Sometimes we think we must become perfect before approaching God. Thérèse reminds us that our weakness can become the place where we learn to trust God's strength.
Small Things Done with Great Love
One of the greatest lessons of Saint Thérèse is that love gives value to even the smallest action.
A kind word, a patient response, helping someone who needs us, forgiving an offense, praying for someone silently, doing our responsibilities faithfully, or accepting an inconvenience without complaining—these may appear insignificant to the world.
But when they are offered to God with love, they become acts of holiness.
We should therefore never think that our daily lives are too ordinary for God.
A mother caring for her children, a teacher patiently teaching a child, a worker honestly doing his or her job, a person caring for an elderly relative, or someone quietly praying for another person can all be walking the path of holiness.
Love Is the Heart of Our Vocation
Saint Thérèse discovered that love is at the centre of Christian life. She wanted to love Jesus not only in prayer but in every person and every circumstance.
This challenges us to ask ourselves:
Do I love only when it is convenient?
The Little Flower teaches us that these hidden acts of love are precious before God.
When We Feel Small
Many people struggle because they compare themselves with others. We may look at someone's achievements, wealth, talents, ministry, or success and feel that our own contribution is insignificant.
Saint Thérèse gives us another perspective.
God does not ask us to become someone else. He asks us to love Him faithfully with the life He has given us.
You may not be able to change the whole world, but you can change the atmosphere of your home through love.
You may not be able to help everyone, but you can help the person standing before you.
You may not be able to perform great things, but you can do small things faithfully.
That is the beauty of the Little Way.
A Message for Today
Saint Thérèse invites us to stop waiting for a “big opportunity” to become holy.
Begin where you are.
Your ordinary life can become an extraordinary offering when it is placed in God's hands.
Prayer of Saint Thérèse
Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus, Little Flower of Jesus,
teach me your Little Way of humility, simplicity, trust, and love.
Help me not to become discouraged by my weaknesses or failures. Teach me to trust in God's mercy and to place my whole life into His loving hands.
Help me to find holiness in the little things I do every day.
Saint Thérèse, help me walk your Little Way and become holy through the simple things of everyday life.
Amen.
