Born in Siena, Italy, in 1380, Bernardine experienced suffering early in life after losing his parents as a child. John I became pope in the early 6th century, during a period of tension between political rulers and the Church. At that time, King Theodoric, who ruled Italy, followed Arianism—a belief that denied the full divinity of Christ and conflicted with Catholic teaching.
