Gospel Reading - Mark 10:32-45
The readings today reveal the depth of God’s love, the price of our redemption, and the true meaning of greatness in the Christian life. They challenge us to move away from worldly ambition and embrace the humble path of Christ.
In the First Letter of Peter, First Epistle of Peter reminds believers that they were not redeemed with silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ. This powerful truth changes how we see ourselves and how we live. Our salvation was purchased through the sacrifice of Jesus, the spotless Lamb of God. Because of this, our lives are no longer empty or meaningless. We belong to God.
Saint Peter also speaks about the enduring power of God’s word:
“The word of the Lord remains forever.”
Everything in this world fades — wealth, beauty, fame, and human strength — but God’s truth stands forever. In a world filled with uncertainty and temporary pleasures, believers are called to build their lives on what is eternal.
The Psalm from Psalms praises God for His care, protection, and faithful word. The Lord strengthens His people, blesses them with peace, and guides them through His commands. God does not leave His children without direction; His word nourishes and sustains the soul.
In the Gospel according to Gospel of Mark, Jesus prepares His disciples for His coming suffering, death, and resurrection. While Jesus speaks about sacrifice, James and John are thinking about positions of honor and greatness. They desire places of glory beside Him.
Jesus responds with a lesson that completely transforms the idea of leadership:
“Whoever wishes to become great among you must be your servant.”
The world often defines greatness by power, recognition, status, and control. But Jesus teaches that true greatness is found in humility, service, sacrifice, and love. Christ Himself became the perfect example:
“The Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.”
This is the heart of Christian discipleship. To follow Jesus means to serve others with compassion, patience, and selflessness. Whether in family life, ministry, work, or community, every act of humble service reflects the spirit of Christ.
These readings also invite us to examine our intentions. Do we seek recognition more than service? Do we follow Christ only for blessings, or are we willing to carry the cross with Him? Jesus calls His disciples not to a life of selfish ambition but to a life poured out in love.
