Following Christ Faithfully Until the End
Following Christ Faithfully Until the End
First Reading - Acts of the Apostles 28: 16-20. 30-31
Responsorial Psalm- Psalm 11:4.5.7
Alleluia - John 16:7. 13
Gospel Reading - John 21:20-25
Today’s readings bring us to the closing chapters of both the Acts of the Apostles and the Gospel of John. They remind us that the mission of Christ continues through faithful witnesses who remain steadfast in truth, love, and perseverance. Through the example of Saint Paul and the final words surrounding Saint Peter and the beloved disciple, we are encouraged to focus on our personal journey with Christ and trust the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
In the first reading from the Acts of the Apostles, Paul finally arrives in Rome after enduring imprisonment, trials, storms, and countless hardships. Though he is under guard, Paul’s spirit remains free and focused on his mission. Instead of becoming bitter or discouraged, he continues proclaiming the Kingdom of God with courage and confidence.
Paul’s life teaches us a powerful lesson about perseverance. Difficult circumstances did not stop him from fulfilling God’s purpose. Even while chained, he remained spiritually free because his heart belonged completely to Christ.
Many times, we allow challenges, disappointments, or delays to weaken our faith. We may feel limited by our situations or discouraged by obstacles. Yet Paul reminds us that no external circumstance can stop God’s work in a willing heart. When we remain faithful, God continues to use us wherever we are.
The reading ends beautifully with Paul boldly preaching about Jesus “without hindrance.” This ending is significant because it shows that the Gospel cannot be chained. The message of Christ continues to spread despite opposition, suffering, or persecution.
The Psalm declares that the Lord is just and loves justice. God sees the hearts of His people and remains present with those who seek righteousness. Even when evil seems strong in the world, God remains sovereign and faithful. The righteous are never abandoned by Him.
In the Gospel, Peter notices the beloved disciple following behind and asks Jesus, “Lord, what about him?” Jesus responds, “What is that to you? Follow me.”
These words contain an important spiritual lesson. So often, people compare their lives, journeys, blessings, and callings with others. We may become distracted by what others are doing, what they have achieved, or how God is working in their lives. Yet Jesus reminds Peter—and us—that discipleship is personal.
God has a unique path and purpose for every person. Comparing ourselves with others can lead to jealousy, insecurity, pride, or discouragement. Christ simply calls each of us to remain faithful to our own mission and continue following Him wholeheartedly.
The Gospel also reminds us of the testimony of the beloved disciple, whose witness points people toward Jesus. The mission of every Christian is ultimately the same: to reflect Christ so that others may come to know Him.
The mention of the Holy Spirit in today’s readings is also important. Jesus promised that the Spirit of truth would guide His followers. We are not left alone in our spiritual journey. The Holy Spirit teaches, strengthens, convicts, and leads us daily.
When life feels uncertain, the Holy Spirit gives wisdom. When we are weak, He gives strength. When we are confused, He leads us into truth. God’s presence remains with His people through every season of life.
Today’s readings encourage us to remain focused on Christ instead of comparing ourselves with others. Our task is not to compete but to remain faithful. Like Paul, we are called to continue witnessing to the Gospel no matter our circumstances. Like Peter, we are invited to simply follow Jesus with trust and love.
As we reflect on these readings, may we ask for the grace to persevere in faith, listen to the guidance of the Holy Spirit, and remain faithful to the unique calling God has placed upon our lives.
Reflection Questions:
Am I allowing challenges or disappointments to weaken my faith?
Do I compare my spiritual journey with others instead of focusing on Christ?
How can I become a stronger witness to the Gospel in my daily life?
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, thank You for calling me to follow You. Help me remain faithful no matter the challenges I face. Free my heart from comparison and distraction, and teach me to focus only on Your will for my life. Holy Spirit, guide me into truth, strengthen my faith, and help me become a courageous witness to the Gospel each day. Amen.
