Walking in the Light of Christ
Walking in the Light of Christ
Today’s readings call us to examine what it truly means to know God. They remind us that faith is not merely spoken—it is lived, expressed through obedience, love, and the light of Christ revealed to the world.
1. Love as the Measure of True Faith — 1 John 2:3–11
Saint John is direct and challenging:
“Whoever says, ‘I know Him,’ but does not keep His commandments, is a liar.”
To know God is to live according to His will. The commandment John emphasizes is love—love that goes beyond words into action. Hatred, resentment, or indifference toward others blinds the heart and keeps us in darkness.
Walking in the light means choosing forgiveness, compassion, and humility, even when it is difficult. Love becomes the visible sign that we truly belong to Christ.
2. Proclaiming God’s Glory — Psalm 96
The psalmist invites the whole world to rejoice:
“Sing to the Lord a new song…Proclaim His marvelous deeds to all the nations.”
God’s glory is not hidden or exclusive. It shines forth to be shared. When believers walk in love and truth, they become living proclamations of God’s greatness. Our lives are meant to reflect God’s splendor, drawing others to Him.
3. Christ, the Light to the Nations — Luke 2:32
Simeon proclaims Jesus as:
“A light for revelation to the Gentiles, and glory for Your people Israel.”
Jesus is not only the fulfillment of Israel’s hope but the light meant for all humanity. In Him, darkness is exposed, and truth is revealed. This light comforts, but it also challenges—it calls for conversion and commitment.
4. A Light That Reveals the Heart — Luke 2:22–35
In the Presentation of the Lord, Mary and Joseph faithfully offer Jesus in the Temple. Simeon’s prophecy, however, reveals that Christ’s mission will not be easy:
“This child is destined for the fall and rise of many… and a sword will pierce your own soul.”
The light of Christ brings salvation, but it also reveals hearts. We must choose whether to accept this light or resist it. Mary’s quiet acceptance teaches us faithful surrender—even when God’s plan includes suffering.
Living the Word Today
These readings ask us:
-
Do we truly know Christ, or only speak about Him?
-
Does our love reflect His light?
-
Are we willing to let Christ reveal and transform our hearts?
To walk in the light is to live in love, truth, and obedience—allowing Christ to shine through us in a world longing for hope.
