Chosen as Friends: Living the Commandment of Love

Readings
First Reading - Acts of the Apostles 15:22-31
Responsorial Psalm- Psalm 57:8-9.10-12
Alleluia - John 15:15
Gospel Reading - John 15:12-17

The readings from Acts 15:22–31; Psalm 57; and John 15:12–17 reveal the heart of Christian life: we are chosen by Christ, called His friends, and sent to love one another as He has loved us.

In the Gospel of Gospel of John (15:12–17), Jesus gives one of His clearest and most powerful commandments:

“Love one another as I have loved you.”

This is not ordinary love. Jesus sets Himself as the example. His love is patient, sacrificial, forgiving, and faithful—even to the point of giving His life.

Then He says something extraordinary:

“I no longer call you slaves… I have called you friends.”

What a beautiful relationship Christ offers us. We are not distant servants acting out of fear. We are invited into closeness, trust, and communion with Him. He shares His heart with us and calls us to live in that same spirit of love toward others.

Jesus also reminds the disciples:

“It was not you who chose me, but I who chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit that will remain.”

Our lives are not accidental. We are chosen with purpose—to bear lasting fruit through love, service, and faithfulness.

In Acts of the Apostles (15:22–31), we see this spirit of love and unity in action. After the early Church resolves the question concerning Gentile believers, the apostles send a message of encouragement and peace to the communities.

Instead of creating heavier burdens, they seek to strengthen and reassure the believers. The result is joy and encouragement among the people.

This passage reminds us that the Church is called to build up, not tear down. Decisions rooted in love and guided by the Holy Spirit bring unity and peace.

Psalm 57 becomes a song of gratitude and praise:

“My heart is steadfast, O God… I will praise you among the nations.”

A heart transformed by God’s love naturally overflows into worship and witness.

Reflection for Your Life

Do you truly believe that Christ calls you His friend?

Is your love for others reflecting the love of Jesus?

Are your words and actions bringing encouragement and unity to those around you?

Faith in Action

Show intentional love through kindness, patience, and forgiveness

Encourage someone who may be struggling or discouraged

Remember daily that you are chosen and loved by Christ

You are not forgotten, unwanted, or alone.

Jesus has chosen you, called you His friend, and entrusted you with the mission of love.

So today, remain in His friendship, love generously, and bear fruit that lasts—

because a life rooted in Christ’s love changes the world.
