Witnesses of Christ: Faithful in the Midst of Opposition

Readings
First Reading - Acts of the Apostles 16:11-15
Responsorial Psalm- Psalm 149: 1-6. 9
Alleluia John 15:26b.  27a
Gospel Reading-  John 15:26-16:4a

The readings from Acts 16:11–15; Psalm 149; and John 15:26–16:4a remind us that every Christian is called to be a witness of Christ, strengthened by the Holy Spirit and sustained even in difficult times.

In the Gospel of Gospel of John (15:26–16:4a), Jesus prepares His disciples for the reality of mission. He promises them the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, who will testify to the truth about Him:

“When the Advocate comes… He will testify to me. And you also testify.”

The disciples are not left alone to carry the Gospel by their own strength. The Holy Spirit becomes their guide, courage, and wisdom.

Jesus also warns them that following Him will not always be easy. There will be opposition, rejection, and misunderstanding. Yet He tells them these things beforehand so that they will not lose faith when trials come.

This is an important reminder for us today: Christian witness requires courage. To live for Christ in a world that often rejects His values means remaining faithful even when it is uncomfortable.

In Acts of the Apostles (16:11–15), we see a beautiful example of how God prepares hearts for the Gospel. Saint Paul the Apostle arrives in Philippi and meets a woman named Lydia of Thyatira.

As Paul speaks, “the Lord opened her heart” to receive the message. Lydia responds immediately with faith and hospitality, opening her home to the missionaries.

Her story reminds us that evangelization is ultimately God’s work. We are called to witness faithfully, but it is God who touches and transforms hearts.

Psalm 149 overflows with joyful praise:

“Sing to the Lord a new song.”

It celebrates the joy of belonging to God and honoring Him with our lives. Even in struggles, praise remains a powerful act of faith.

Reflection for Your Life

Are you willing to stand as a witness for Christ, even when it is difficult?

Do you rely on the Holy Spirit for strength and guidance?

Is your heart open, like Lydia’s, to receive God’s Word more deeply?

Faith in Action

Ask the Holy Spirit daily for courage and wisdom

Share your faith through both words and actions

Open your heart and home to opportunities for service and hospitality

You are called to testify to Christ.

Not by your own strength, but through the power of the Holy Spirit working within you.

So today, remain faithful, speak truth with love, and trust God to open hearts—

because every act of witness can become the beginning of transformation.
