Given Back to God: When Gratitude Becomes Praise.
Given Back to God: When Gratitude Becomes Praise.
Monday of the Fourth Week of Advent December 22
Today’s readings draw us into two beautiful songs of faith—Hannah’s prayer and Mary’s Magnificat. Across generations, two women teach us how gratitude, when rooted in humility, becomes powerful praise that glorifies God and transforms the heart.
1. A Gift Returned to God — 1 Samuel 1:24–28
Hannah’s story begins in deep pain. Childless and mocked, she poured out her soul before the Lord and made a promise: if God gave her a son, she would give him back.
When Samuel is born, Hannah keeps her word.
“For this child I prayed, and the Lord has granted me what I asked.”
True gratitude does not cling to God’s gifts as possessions. It recognizes that everything comes from God and belongs to Him. Hannah’s act of offering Samuel back to the Lord is an extraordinary expression of trust and surrender.
She teaches us that faith is not only asking—it is also letting go.
2. The Lord Who Reverses Fortunes — 1 Samuel 2:1, 4–8
Hannah’s prayer becomes a hymn of praise:
-
The weak are made strong
-
The hungry are filled
-
The barren bear children
-
The poor are lifted from the dust
Her song reveals the heart of God—a God who sides with the lowly and overturns human expectations.
This is not prideful triumph. It is joy rooted in the knowledge that God sees, God hears, and God acts.
3. Mary’s Magnificat: Praise Made Flesh — Luke 1:46–56
Centuries later, another woman sings.
Mary’s Magnificat echoes Hannah’s song, but with even deeper fulfillment:
“My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord…He has lifted up the lowly.”
Mary does not focus on herself, even though she carries the Savior of the world. Her praise points entirely to God. Like Hannah, Mary recognizes that God’s mercy works through humility.
Through Mary, God’s promise reaches all generations.
