In the first reading (Jeremiah 26:1–9), the Lord sends the prophet Jeremiah to stand in the Temple and proclaim a message of repentance. God instructs him not to leave out a single word, hoping that the people will turn from their sinful ways. Jeremiah faithfully delivers God's message, calling the people to amend their lives and obey the Lord. Instead of repenting, however, the priests, prophets, and people become angry and demand Jeremiah's death.
