1. Live by the Spirit
In his letter to the Galatians, Saint Paul teaches us the difference between living according to the desires of the flesh and living according to the Holy Spirit.
The works of the flesh include hatred, jealousy, selfish ambition, envy, and other behaviours that destroy our relationship with God and one another. In contrast, the fruit of the Spirit includes love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
These fruits are not simply good qualities we develop by our own strength. They grow in us as we cooperate with the grace of God, surrender our sinful desires, and allow the Holy Spirit to guide our daily choices.
Being a Christian is more than identifying ourselves as believers. It means allowing Christ to transform our attitudes, our words, our relationships, and our actions.
We may not become perfect overnight, but each day presents an opportunity to grow in holiness. When anger rises, we can choose patience. When jealousy appears, we can choose gratitude. When selfishness tempts us, we can choose generosity.
The more we surrender to the Holy Spirit, the more our lives begin to reflect the character of Christ.
2. Be Like a Tree Planted by Streams of Water
Psalm 1 presents us with two paths: the way of the righteous and the way of the wicked.
The righteous person delights in the law of the Lord and meditates on it day and night. Such a person is compared to a tree planted beside streams of water, bearing fruit in season and whose leaves do not wither.
This beautiful image reminds us that a fruitful spiritual life depends on remaining rooted in God.
A tree cannot bear healthy fruit if its roots are continually deprived of nourishment. In the same way, our souls become weak when we neglect prayer, Scripture, and obedience to God's will.
The world constantly offers us competing voices, distractions, and values. If we allow these things to direct our lives, we may gradually drift away from God. But when we remain rooted in His Word, we gain wisdom and strength to face life's challenges.
Notice that the tree bears fruit in season. Spiritual growth also takes time. We may not see immediate results from our prayers or efforts, but God continues to work within us.
Our responsibility is to remain faithful, trusting that He will produce good fruit in His time.
3. Practise What You Preach
In Luke's Gospel, Jesus challenges the Pharisees and teachers of the law because they focus on religious details while neglecting justice and the love of God.
They carefully observe certain religious obligations but fail to practise the deeper values those obligations should encourage.
Jesus does not condemn tithing or religious observance itself. Rather, He exposes the danger of performing religious duties while ignoring compassion, fairness, humility, and love.
The same warning applies to us today.
We may attend Mass regularly, pray every morning, read the Bible, give offerings, and participate in church activities. These are valuable practices. However, they should lead us to become more loving, honest, merciful, and considerate.
What does our faith mean if we pray for blessings but refuse to help someone in need? What does it mean to speak about God's love while treating others with contempt? What is the value of religious knowledge if we use it to judge people rather than help them grow?
Jesus also rebukes the teachers of the law for placing heavy burdens on others without helping them carry those burdens.
This challenges everyone who holds a position of authority—parents, teachers, religious leaders, employers, and anyone responsible for others. Leadership should not be used to control, exploit, or discourage people. It should be exercised with justice, compassion, and a willingness to serve.
God desires a faith that is sincere within and visible through the way we treat others.
4. What Is God Saying to Us Today?
Today's readings invite us to examine the fruit our lives are producing.
Examine your character: Are love, patience, kindness, and self-control growing in you?
Stay rooted in God's Word: Make time for Scripture and prayer, even when life becomes busy.
Practise what you profess: Let your daily behaviour reflect the Christian faith you proclaim.
Choose justice and compassion: Treat people fairly, especially those who depend on you or have less power than you.
Help others carry their burdens: Do not make life harder for people through harsh judgment, selfishness, or unnecessary demands.
Follow the voice of Christ: The Gospel acclamation reminds us that Jesus knows His sheep and His sheep hear His voice. Listen to Him and follow His way.
We should not measure our spiritual growth only by how much religious activity we perform. We should also ask whether we are becoming more like Jesus.
5. A Prayer to Live by the Holy Spirit
Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of Your Word and the presence of Your Holy Spirit.
Search my heart and reveal every attitude that does not reflect Your love. Remove from me jealousy, pride, selfish ambition, anger, and every desire that leads me away from Your will.
Holy Spirit, fill me with Your grace. Help me to grow in love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
Lord Jesus, teach me to hear Your voice and follow You faithfully. Keep me rooted in Your Word like a tree planted beside streams of water. May my life bear good fruit in every season.
Forgive me for the times I have appeared religious while neglecting justice, mercy, and love. Teach me to practise what I preach, to lead with humility, and to help others carry their burdens.
May my faith never be empty words, but a living testimony of Your goodness.
Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
6. Personal Reflection Question
What kind of fruit is my life producing, and do my actions reflect the love of Christ that I profess?
Take a few moments today to identify one attitude you need to change and one fruit of the Holy Spirit you will consciously practise.
Today's Reminder
Stay rooted in God's Word, walk in the Holy Spirit, and let your life bear the fruit of love. True holiness is not merely knowing what God commands; it is allowing His grace to transform the way you live.
