Called to See and Follow: Christ, Our True Foundation

Today's readings invite us to recognize Jesus as the Son of God and the King of God's people. They also reveal the beauty of God's Kingdom, where His people are gathered into one holy community built upon the foundation of the apostles.

In the first reading (Revelation 21:9–14), John is shown the heavenly Jerusalem, described as the Bride, the wife of the Lamb. The city shines with God's glory and has twelve gates bearing the names of the twelve tribes of Israel. Its foundations bear the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.

This vision points to the fulfillment of God's plan of salvation. God's people are not scattered forever; He gathers them into a holy community where His presence and glory are fully revealed.

The twelve foundations remind us of the important role of the apostles. Their witness to Christ became a foundation upon which the Church was built. The Church therefore has a mission to preserve and proclaim the faith handed down through the apostles.

The heavenly Jerusalem also reminds us that our present life is moving toward an eternal destination. We are called to live now as citizens of the Kingdom we hope to enter in its fullness.

The Responsorial Psalm (Psalm 145:10–13, 17–18) calls all God's works to praise Him. The Lord is gracious, compassionate, just, and near to all who call upon Him sincerely.

God's Kingdom is described as an everlasting Kingdom. Human kingdoms rise and fall, leaders come and go, and earthly achievements eventually pass away. But God's Kingdom endures forever.

The Gospel Acclamation (John 1:49) gives us Nathanael's powerful confession:

"Rabbi, You are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel."

This is the heart of Christian faith: Jesus is not merely a teacher or prophet. He is the Son of God and King.

In the Gospel (John 1:45–51), Philip tells Nathanael that he has found the One spoken about by Moses and the prophets—Jesus of Nazareth. Nathanael responds with skepticism:

"Can anything good come out of Nazareth?"

Yet Philip does not argue with him. He simply says:

"Come and see."

When Nathanael meets Jesus, everything changes. Jesus reveals that He already knows him, and Nathanael responds by recognizing Jesus as the Son of God and King of Israel.

This encounter teaches us an important lesson about faith. Sometimes people have doubts or questions about Jesus. We do not always need to win arguments. Like Philip, we can simply invite them: "Come and see."

Let them encounter Christ through Scripture, prayer, the Church, and especially through the witness of our lives.

Jesus then tells Nathanael that he will see even greater things. Faith is not the end of discovery; it is the beginning of a deeper journey with Christ.

From Doubt to Faith

Nathanael's journey can be seen in three simple stages:

1. He questioned.

He was skeptical about Jesus.

2. He came and encountered Christ.

Philip's invitation brought him into an encounter with Jesus.

3. He confessed his faith.

He recognized Jesus as the Son of God and King.

This is also the journey of many believers. We may have questions, doubts, or uncertainties, but we are invited to bring them honestly before Christ.

The answer is not always found in having every question solved. Sometimes it begins simply by coming closer to Jesus.




Lessons for Daily Life

Recognize Jesus as the Son of God and the King of your life.

Do not be afraid of honest questions or doubts; bring them to Christ.

Invite others to encounter Jesus through your words and example.

Remember that God's Kingdom is eternal while earthly achievements are temporary.

Remain faithful to the apostolic faith handed down through the Church.

Trust that God knows you personally, just as Jesus knew Nathanael.

Approach Christ with an open heart, ready to discover the "greater things" He wants to reveal.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for revealing Your Son, Jesus Christ, as the foundation of our faith and the King of Your eternal Kingdom. Open my eyes to see Him more clearly and my heart to follow Him more faithfully.

Lord Jesus, when I experience doubt or uncertainty, help me to come closer to You rather than turning away. Deepen my faith and help me recognize You as the Son of God and the true King of my life.

Make me like Philip, ready to invite others to "come and see" through my words, kindness, and example. May my life bear witness to Your Kingdom and lead others toward Your love and truth.
