From Dry Bones to New Life: Love God and Your Neighbour

Readings
First Reading - Ezekiel 37:1-14
Responsorial Psalm- Psalm 107: 1-9
Alleluia - Psalm 25:4,5
Gospel - Matthew 22:34-40

Today's readings bring together two powerful themes: God's power to restore what seems hopeless and the command to love God and others wholeheartedly. They remind us that no situation is too dead for God to revive, and that the life He restores within us must become a life of love.

In the first reading (Ezekiel 37:1–14), Ezekiel is taken by the Spirit to a valley filled with dry bones. The bones represent the people of Israel, who feel completely defeated and without hope. Their exile has left them saying:

"Our bones are dried up, and our hope is lost."

But God asks Ezekiel, "Can these bones live?" Ezekiel wisely answers, "O Lord God, You know."

God then commands Ezekiel to prophesy over the bones. Gradually, the bones come together, flesh appears, and breath enters them. The dead are restored to life.

God explains that the vision represents His promise to restore Israel:

"I will put My Spirit within you, and you shall live."

This is a powerful message of hope. Sometimes our lives can feel like a valley of dry bones—dreams may seem dead, relationships may appear broken, opportunities may seem lost, or our spiritual life may feel empty. But God is able to bring life where we see only hopelessness.

The miracle begins with God's Word and is completed by His Spirit. What looks impossible to us is never beyond God's power.

The Responsorial Psalm (Psalm 107:1–9) echoes this message of restoration. It describes people who were wandering, hungry, thirsty, and lost, but when they cried to the Lord, He rescued them and led them to a place of safety.

The repeated theme is simple: God's mercy endures forever. He satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things. When we are lost or empty, we can turn to Him with confidence.

The Gospel Acclamation (Psalm 25:4–5) is a beautiful prayer:

"Make me to know Your ways, O Lord; teach me Your paths. Lead me in Your truth and teach me."

We need God's guidance not only when we are in crisis but every day. His ways lead us toward the fullness of life.

In the Gospel (Matthew 22:34–40), a Pharisee asks Jesus which commandment is the greatest. Jesus gives a simple but profound answer:

"You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind."

Then He adds:

"You shall love your neighbour as yourself."

Jesus teaches that the entire law and the prophets depend upon these two commandments.

Love Is the Evidence of New Life

There is a beautiful connection between the dry bones and the commandment of love.

God promises Ezekiel, "I will put My Spirit within you, and you shall live."

Then Jesus tells us how that new life should be expressed: through love.

A heart revived by God's Spirit cannot remain closed to others. When God gives us new life, He calls us to become instruments of His love.

Loving God means giving Him first place in our lives. Loving our neighbour means treating others with dignity, compassion, patience, forgiveness, and generosity.

We cannot claim to love God while deliberately refusing to love the people around us.

Lessons for Daily Life

Never declare a situation hopeless when God is still at work.

Bring your "dry bones"—your disappointments, failures, fears, and broken dreams—to God.

Ask the Holy Spirit to renew your heart and restore your spiritual life.

Seek God's guidance before making important decisions.

Put God first in your thoughts, choices, relationships, and priorities.

Show your love for God through the way you treat other people.

Practice forgiveness, compassion, patience, and generosity.

Remember that genuine Christian life is ultimately a life of love.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, You are the God who brings life to dry bones and hope to the hopeless. Breathe Your Holy Spirit into every dry and lifeless area of my life. Restore my faith where it has become weak, revive my hope where it has faded, and bring healing where there is brokenness.

Lord Jesus, teach me to love You with all my heart, soul, mind, and strength. Help me to love my neighbour with patience, compassion, forgiveness, and generosity. May the new life You give me become visible through the love I show to others. Lead me in Your ways and teach me Your paths, so that my whole life may glorify You.

Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
