Belonging to the Family of God

Today's readings reveal the depth of God's mercy and the joy of belonging to His family. They Lord remind us that God's love is faithful, His forgiveness is limitless, and that true kinship with Jesus is found in doing the will of the Father.

In the first reading (Micah 7:14–15, 18–20), the prophet ends his book with a beautiful hymn of hope. He prays that God will once again shepherd His people with tenderness and power, just as He did during the Exodus. Then Micah proclaims one of the most moving descriptions of God's mercy in the Old Testament:

"Who is a God like You, pardoning iniquity and passing over transgression?"

God does not remain angry forever because He delights in showing mercy. He casts our sins into the depths of the sea and remains faithful to the promises He made to Abraham and Jacob. This reading assures us that no sin is greater than God's mercy when we turn to Him with sincere repentance.

The Responsorial Psalm (Psalm 85:2–8) echoes this hope. The psalmist praises God for forgiving His people's sins and prays for renewed mercy: "Show us, O Lord, Your steadfast love, and grant us Your salvation." God's forgiveness is not only the removal of sin but also the restoration of peace and joy.

The Gospel Acclamation (John 14:23) reminds us of Jesus' promise: "Whoever loves Me will keep My word, and My Father will love him, and We will come to him." Love for Christ is shown through faithful obedience, and those who live according to His Word become a dwelling place for God.

In the Gospel (Matthew 12:46–50), while Jesus is teaching, His mother and relatives arrive seeking to speak with Him. Jesus uses the moment to teach an important spiritual truth. Stretching out His hand toward His disciples, He says:

"Whoever does the will of My Father in heaven is My brother and sister and mother."

Jesus is not rejecting His earthly family, especially His Blessed Mother. Rather, He reveals that the deepest bond with Him is not based on blood relationships but on faith and obedience to God's will.

Mary herself is the perfect example of this truth. She belongs to Jesus not only because she is His mother according to the flesh but also because she listened to God's Word, believed it, and lived it faithfully. She is the first and greatest disciple.

This Gospel invites us to ask ourselves whether we are truly living as members of God's family. Every act of obedience, every prayer, every work of charity, and every effort to follow Christ strengthens our relationship with Him.

Lessons for Daily Life

Trust completely in God's mercy and never despair of His forgiveness.

Thank God for His faithfulness, even when you have been unfaithful.

Show your love for Jesus by keeping His Word each day.

Strive to do God's will in your family, workplace, parish, and community.

Remember that through faith and obedience, you belong to the family of God.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for Your endless mercy and unfailing love. Forgive my sins and help me to trust completely in Your compassion. Give me the grace to hear Your Word, obey Your will, and follow the example of the Blessed Virgin Mary in faithful discipleship. May I live each day as a true member of Your family, bringing Your love and mercy to everyone I meet. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
