In the first reading (Jeremiah 28:1–17), the prophet Jeremiah confronts the false prophet Hananiah. Hananiah boldly claims that God will soon end Babylon's domination and restore the people, speaking a message that everyone wanted to hear. Jeremiah initially expresses the hope that Hananiah's words might be true, but he reminds the people that a prophet's message must be judged by whether it truly comes to pass.
