Reflection
Today's readings remind us that true blessedness does not come merely from our family background, social status, achievements, or outward religious practices. True blessedness comes from belonging to Christ, trusting God's promises, and hearing His Word with a heart ready to obey.
St. Paul explains that through faith in Jesus Christ, we become children of God. In the Gospel, Jesus teaches that those who hear the Word of God and keep it are truly blessed.
Together, these readings invite us to ask ourselves: Am I simply listening to God's Word, or am I allowing it to transform the way I live?
1. Through Faith, We Become Children of God
St. Paul writes:
“For in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith.” — Galatians 3:26
What a beautiful truth!
Through Christ, we are invited into a new relationship with God. Our identity is no longer determined by our past mistakes, our weaknesses, our possessions, or what other people think of us.
Our deepest identity is found in Christ.
Paul explains that those who have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. This means that our Christian identity should shape our character, our decisions, and our relationships.
If we belong to Christ, we are called to become more like Him.
We should grow in love, patience, humility, forgiveness, honesty, and compassion.
Being a child of God is not simply a title we claim. It is a relationship we are called to live every day.
You are called not only to believe in Christ but also to reflect Christ in the way you live.
2. In Christ, Our Differences Do Not Divide Us
Paul declares:
“There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” — Galatians 3:28
Paul is teaching that these human distinctions do not determine a person's worth or standing as an heir of God's promise in Christ.
In a world where people are often separated by wealth, education, ethnicity, nationality, and social position, the Church is called to demonstrate a different way of living.
Before God, we are all dependent on His grace.
No one should be treated as less valuable because they are poor, uneducated, elderly, disabled, or from a different background.
If we truly understand that we are one in Christ, we will stop looking down on others and begin recognizing their dignity.
The closer we grow to Christ, the more we should learn to love people without prejudice or pride.
3. Remember What God Has Done
Psalm 105 calls us to give thanks to the Lord, proclaim His deeds, sing His praises, and remember His wonderful works.
The Psalmist reminds God's people that they have a history with Him—a history of promises, protection, and faithfulness.
We, too, need to remember God's goodness.
Sometimes we become so focused on what we are waiting for that we forget what God has already done.
We remember our disappointments more easily than our blessings.
We remember unanswered prayers but overlook the strength God gave us to endure difficult days.
We remember our struggles but forget the times He provided help through other people.
Gratitude helps us recognize God's presence in our journey.
When you feel discouraged, remember the times God carried you through difficulties. When you become afraid of tomorrow, remember His faithfulness yesterday.
A heart that remembers God's goodness finds new courage to trust Him with the future.
4. Blessed Are Those Who Hear God's Word
In the Gospel, a woman raises her voice and praises the mother who gave birth to Jesus.
Jesus responds:
“Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it!” — Luke 11:28
Jesus is not dishonouring His mother. Rather, He directs attention to the blessing of hearing God's Word and faithfully living it.
Mary herself is a beautiful example of this response. She listened to God's message through the angel, accepted God's will, and lived in faithful obedience.
Her greatness was not merely that she gave birth to Jesus. She also trusted God and surrendered herself to His plan.
This is the kind of faith Jesus calls us to practise.
It is possible to hear Scripture every day and still refuse to change.
We can listen to the readings at Mass but continue holding grudges.
We can pray for peace but keep creating conflict.
We can speak about generosity but refuse to help those in need.
We can ask God for guidance but ignore His teachings when they challenge our preferences.
Jesus invites us to go beyond hearing.
The Word of God must move from our ears into our hearts, and from our hearts into our actions.
5. What Does It Mean to Keep God's Word?
Keeping God's Word means allowing it to guide our choices, even when obedience is difficult.
It means telling the truth when dishonesty would be easier.
It means forgiving when resentment feels more natural.
It means treating others with dignity when the world encourages us to judge them.
It means choosing integrity when no one is watching.
It means trusting God when we do not understand everything.
It means correcting our mistakes instead of making excuses for them.
We will not always get everything right. Christian growth is a journey, and we need God's mercy along the way.
But when we fall, we must be willing to return to Him, learn from our failures, and begin again.
Obedience is not about pretending to be perfect. It is about having a heart that remains willing to follow God.
6. Let Your Life Become a Living Gospel
Imagine what would happen if we allowed God's Word to shape every part of our lives.
Our homes would become places of greater patience and understanding.
Our workplaces would become places of honesty and fairness.
Our relationships would become stronger through forgiveness and respect.
Our communities would become more compassionate toward the vulnerable.
Our faith would become visible not only in our prayers but also in our daily conduct.
This is the fruit of hearing and keeping God's Word.
The world does not need Christians who merely know how to speak about Jesus. It needs Christians whose lives help others recognize His love.
When people encounter us, may they see something of Christ in our kindness, our integrity, our humility, and our concern for others.
A Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for making me Your child through faith in Jesus Christ.
Help me to understand my identity in You and never allow my circumstances, failures, or the opinions of others to separate me from Your love.
Teach me to recognize the dignity of every person and to treat others as brothers and sisters in Christ.
Lord, help me remember Your goodness, especially when I become discouraged or afraid of the future.
Open my heart to Your Word. Give me the courage to obey You, even when Your teachings challenge my desires.
May I not be a hearer of Your Word only, but a faithful doer of it.
Teach me to forgive, to serve, to speak truthfully, and to love sincerely.
Like the Blessed Virgin Mary, may I receive Your Word with faith and surrender to Your will.
Let my life bear witness to the Gospel so that others may come to know Your goodness through me.
Lord, help me to hear Your Word, treasure Your Word, and live Your Word every day.
Amen.
