Saint Januarius, Bishop and Martyr

Faithful in Shepherding, Courageous in Witness, and Steadfast unto Death

The Church celebrates Saint Januarius, Bishop and Martyr, on September 19. The Roman Martyrology records him as the bishop of Benevento who suffered martyrdom for Christ at Pozzuoli, near Naples, during the persecutions against the Christian faith.

Saint Januarius reminds us that Christian leadership is ultimately a call to faithful service and courageous witness.

A bishop is called to shepherd God's people—not simply to hold a position of authority, but to guide souls toward Christ. Januarius remained faithful to this calling even when following Christ became dangerous.

His martyrdom teaches us that faith is not merely something we profess when circumstances are comfortable. Faith becomes most powerful when we remain faithful even when there is a cost.

The world may sometimes encourage us to compromise our convictions in order to avoid rejection, criticism, or difficulty. Saint Januarius points us in another direction: remain faithful to Christ.

This does not mean seeking suffering or conflict. Rather, it means refusing to abandon Christ when doing what is right becomes difficult.

A Shepherd Who Belongs to Christ

Saint Januarius was first a shepherd of souls. His example reminds every Christian—whether priest, parent, teacher, leader, or ordinary believer—that our influence should lead others closer to God.

We may not all be called to martyrdom in the literal sense, but every Christian is called to daily faithfulness.

We may have to sacrifice our pride.

We may have to forgive when it is difficult.

We may have to speak the truth with charity.

We may have to choose integrity when dishonesty seems easier.

We may have to continue praying when our prayers seem unanswered.

These ordinary acts of faithfulness are also ways of giving ourselves to Christ.

Courage That Comes From Faith

Saint Januarius did not preserve his life by abandoning his faith. His witness reminds us that Christ is worth more than anything this world can offer.

The martyr understands something profound: earthly life is precious, but eternal life is greater.

When we place our lives in God's hands, fear no longer has the final word.

Saint Januarius therefore invites us to ask:

What am I afraid of losing because of my faith?

Where am I tempted to compromise my Christian values?

Am I willing to remain faithful when nobody is watching?

Does my life point others toward Christ?

The witness of the martyrs is not meant to frighten us. It is meant to strengthen us. Their lives proclaim that God's grace can give ordinary human beings extraordinary courage.

Saint Januarius reminds us that faithfulness today prepares the heart for eternity.

Prayer to Saint Januarius

Saint Januarius, faithful bishop and courageous martyr,
pray for us.

Ask the Lord to strengthen our faith
when we are tempted to become discouraged.

Teach us to remain faithful to Christ
when life becomes difficult.

Help us to serve others with humility,
to speak the truth with love,
and to live our Christian calling with courage.

May we never be ashamed of our faith
or allow fear to separate us from Christ.

Pray for our families, our communities,
our priests, bishops, and all who shepherd God's people.

May your example teach us
that true victory is found in remaining faithful to Jesus
until the end.

Saint Januarius, Bishop and Martyr, pray for us.
