A Faith That Refuses to Give Up

Today's readings reveal a God whose love is universal, merciful, and welcoming. He does not exclude people because of their background, nationality, or past. Instead, He invites everyone who seeks Him with a sincere heart to become part of His people. The Gospel especially challenges us to develop a faith that remains persistent even when the answer to our prayer seems delayed.
In the first reading, the prophet Isaiah declares God's desire to welcome people from every nation. The Lord says that His house shall be called “a house of prayer for all peoples.” God's salvation is not reserved for one particular group. Those who love Him, obey His commandments, and sincerely seek Him are welcomed into His presence. This reminds us that God's Church is meant to be a place of welcome, prayer, and unity.
The Psalm continues this theme by praying that God's saving power may be known throughout the earth. God's blessings are never meant to stop with us. When God blesses us, He also calls us to become instruments through which others can experience His goodness and love.
In the second reading, St. Paul speaks about God's plan of salvation for both Jews and Gentiles. He emphasizes that God's gifts and calling are irrevocable. Even when humanity fails, God's mercy remains at work. St. Paul reminds us that God has allowed everyone to experience the reality of sin and weakness so that He may show mercy to everyone.
This is a powerful message of hope: your failures do not cancel God's love for you. When you sincerely turn back to Him, His mercy remains available.
In the Gospel, Jesus Christ encounters a Canaanite woman whose daughter is suffering terribly. She approaches Jesus and cries out for mercy. At first, Jesus appears not to respond to her. Even when she continues pleading, she does not walk away.
Instead, she humbly persists: “Lord, help me.”
Her response reveals extraordinary faith. She does not demand anything from Jesus. She simply trusts that even a small portion of His mercy is enough. Jesus praises her faith and grants her request, and her daughter is healed.
The Canaanite woman teaches us something essential about prayer: God's silence is not necessarily God's refusal. Sometimes God allows us to persevere because the waiting itself deepens our faith, strengthens our dependence on Him, and teaches us to trust His wisdom.
Her story also challenges us not to place limits on God's mercy. If Jesus welcomed someone whom society could have regarded as an outsider, we too must learn to look beyond differences and treat every person with dignity and compassion.
Lessons for Daily Life
Do not give up on prayer. Continue bringing your needs before God, even when the answer seems delayed.
Approach God with humility. Like the Canaanite woman, simply say, “Lord, help me.”
Trust God's timing. Silence does not mean that God has abandoned you.
Welcome others. God's house is meant to be a house of prayer for all peoples.
Do not allow your past failures to make you believe you are beyond God's mercy.
Let your faith become persistent. True faith continues trusting even when circumstances seem discouraging.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You because Your mercy reaches every nation and every human heart. Give me the persistent faith of the Canaanite woman. When my prayers seem unanswered, help me not to give up but to continue trusting in Your goodness. Remove every pride, prejudice, and judgment from my heart, and teach me to welcome and love others as You do. May my faith remain strong through every trial, and may I always remember that Your mercy is greater than my weaknesses. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
