St. Augustine Zhao Rong and Companions: Faithful Witnesses to Christ Unto Death

Saint Augustine Zhao Rong and his companions remind us that the Gospel knows no boundaries and that faith in Christ is worth every sacrifice. They were a group of bishops, priests, religious, and lay faithful who suffered martyrdom in China over several centuries because they refused to renounce their faith in Jesus Christ. Their courage continues to inspire Christians around the world to remain steadfast in times of trial.

Augustine Zhao Rong was originally a Chinese soldier assigned to escort a Catholic bishop to prison. Witnessing the bishop's unwavering faith deeply moved him. Touched by God's grace, he embraced Christianity, was baptized, and later became one of the first Chinese diocesan priests. The very faith he once helped persecute became the treasure for which he willingly gave his life.

The companions of Saint Augustine Zhao Rong came from different backgrounds, cultures, and walks of life. Some were missionaries who left their homelands to proclaim the Gospel, while others were Chinese converts who remained faithful despite severe persecution. Strengthen Christians who suffer persecution throughout the world, and obtain for us the grace to follow Jesus faithfully every day, so that our lives may always bear witness to His saving love.
