Sow Righteousness and Proclaim the Kingdom of God
Sow Righteousness and Proclaim the Kingdom of God
Today's readings invite us to examine the fruit our lives are producing. God calls us to remain faithful, cultivate hearts of righteousness, and participate in His mission of bringing His Kingdom to the world.
In the first reading (Hosea 10:1-3, 7-8, 12), the prophet Hosea rebukes Israel for enjoying God's blessings while failing to remain faithful to Him. As the nation prospered, it multiplied altars to false gods instead of growing in gratitude and obedience. Their divided hearts led them away from the Lord, and Hosea warns that such unfaithfulness would bring painful consequences.
Yet the reading does not end in judgment. God extends a loving invitation: "Sow righteousness for yourselves, reap the fruit of steadfast love; break up your fallow ground, for it is time to seek the Lord." Just as hardened soil must be broken before seeds can grow, our hearts must be opened through repentance, prayer, and humility so that God's grace can bear fruit within us.
The Psalm (105:2-7) encourages us to remember God's mighty works and to seek Him continually. The psalmist reminds us that those who look to the Lord find strength and joy. Even in difficult times, we are called to trust in His faithfulness and never stop seeking His presence.
The Gospel Acclamation (Mark 1:15) proclaims the heart of Jesus' message: "The Kingdom of God is at hand. Repent and believe in the Gospel." Repentance is not merely feeling sorry for our sins; it is a change of heart that leads us to follow Christ more faithfully each day.
In the Gospel (Matthew 10:1-7), Jesus calls His twelve apostles, gives them authority over unclean spirits and diseases, and sends them out with a clear mission: "Go... and proclaim that the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand." Before sending them, He equips them. God never calls us to a mission without also providing the grace we need to accomplish it.
Although this commission was first given to the apostles, it extends to every baptized Christian. We are all called to proclaim the Gospel—not only through our words but through lives marked by love, forgiveness, justice, humility, and service.
