Gospel Reading Matthew 8:23-27
Today's readings remind us that God speaks to His people through His Word, calls them to repentance, and remains with them even in the fiercest storms. When we place our trust in Him, fear gives way to faith, and anxiety is replaced by peace.
In the first reading from Book of Amos, the prophet Amos reminds Israel that God had chosen them and blessed them with a special covenant. Yet because they repeatedly ignored His commandments, the Lord called them to repentance through His prophets. Amos declares that God does nothing without revealing His plan to His servants, the prophets, and he urges the people to prepare to meet the Lord.
This reading is both a warning and an invitation. God's corrections are never meant to destroy us but to bring us back to Him. He patiently calls us to conversion because He desires our salvation.
The Psalm from Psalms is a prayer of confidence. The psalmist seeks God's guidance and mercy, trusting that the Lord leads those who sincerely seek Him. The accompanying verse expresses this hope beautifully:
"I wait for the Lord; my soul waits for His word."
Waiting for God is not passive; it is an act of faith that believes His promises even when His timing is not yet clear.
In the Gospel from Gospel of Matthew, Jesus and His disciples are crossing the sea when a violent storm arises. The waves crash over the boat while Jesus sleeps peacefully.
Terrified, the disciples cry out:
"Lord, save us! We are perishing!"
Jesus responds:
"Why are you afraid, O you of little faith?"
He then rebukes the winds and the sea, and a great calm follows.
This miracle reveals Jesus' divine authority over all creation. The winds and the sea obey Him because He is the Lord of heaven and earth. More importantly, it teaches that Christ is present with us even when He seems silent.
Like the disciples, we all experience storms—illness, financial difficulties, grief, uncertainty, family struggles, or moments of spiritual dryness. During these times, we may wonder whether God sees our suffering. Yet today's Gospel assures us that Jesus is always in the boat with us. His silence is never His absence.
The readings beautifully complement one another. Amos calls us to listen to God's voice and return to Him. The Gospel teaches us to trust that same God when life's storms threaten to overwhelm us. Faith does not mean that storms will never come; it means believing that Christ is greater than every storm.
