The God of the Living: Faith, Courage, and the Hope of Resurrection

Readings
First Reading - 2 Timothy 1:1-3.6-12
Responsorial Psalm- Psalm 123:1-2
Alleluia - John 11:25. 26
Gospel Reading - Mark 12:18-27

Today's readings encourage us to remain steadfast in faith, rekindle the gifts God has given us, and place our hope firmly in the promise of eternal life through Jesus Christ.

In the first reading from Second Epistle to Timothy, Saint Paul writes to his beloved disciple Timothy with affection and encouragement. He urges Timothy to "fan into flame" the gift that God has bestowed upon him. Paul reminds him that God does not give a spirit of fear, but a spirit of power, love, and self-discipline.

These words speak to every Christian. At times, we may feel discouraged, weak, or hesitant in living out our faith. Yet God continually calls us to renew the gifts He has placed within us. Through the Holy Spirit, we receive the strength to persevere, witness to the Gospel, and remain faithful even in difficult circumstances.

Paul himself is a powerful example. Though imprisoned and suffering for the Gospel, he remains confident because he knows whom he has believed. His faith is not based on circumstances but on the certainty of God's faithfulness.

The Psalm from Psalms expresses a spirit of trust and dependence on God:

"To you I lift up my eyes, O you who are enthroned in heaven."

Like servants looking to their master, the faithful look to God for mercy, guidance, and help. The psalm reminds us that our hope rests not in our own strength but in the Lord's loving care.

In the Gospel from Gospel of Mark, the Sadducees approach Jesus with a question designed to challenge belief in the resurrection. Since they do not believe in life after death, they present a hypothetical situation involving marriage and seek to expose what they consider a contradiction.

Jesus responds by correcting their misunderstanding. He teaches that life in the resurrection is different from earthly life. More importantly, He points to God's revelation to Moses:

"I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob."

Jesus then declares:

"He is not God of the dead but of the living."

This profound statement reveals the heart of Christian hope. Those who belong to God do not cease to exist after death. Through Christ, death is not the end but a passage to eternal life. God's relationship with His people continues beyond the grave because He is the Lord of life.

The Gospel is further illuminated by Jesus' declaration:

"I am the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live."

This promise gives meaning and hope to every believer. In a world marked by suffering, loss, and uncertainty, Christians live with confidence that Christ has conquered death and opened the gates of eternal life.
