Today's readings celebrate the birth of John the Baptist, a man uniquely chosen by God to prepare the way for the coming of Christ. His life reminds us that every person is called by God for a purpose and that true greatness is found in pointing others to Jesus.

In the first reading from Book of Isaiah, the servant of the Lord declares that God called him from the womb and formed him for a special mission. Although this prophecy finds its fullest fulfillment in Christ, the Church also sees in it a reflection of the mission of John the Baptist. Before his birth, God had already chosen and prepared him to be a light and a witness to God's saving plan.

This reading reminds us that God's call begins long before we recognize it. Each person is known, loved, and entrusted with a unique mission by the Lord.

The Psalm from Psalms beautifully celebrates God's intimate knowledge of every human life:

"You formed my inmost being; You knit me in my mother's womb."

These words reveal the dignity and value of every person. God knows us completely and lovingly guides us according to His purpose.

In the second reading from Acts of the Apostles, Saint Paul recounts God's plan of salvation. Speaking about John the Baptist, Paul explains that John's mission was to prepare the people for the coming of Jesus. John faithfully fulfilled his role, humbly acknowledging that he was not the Messiah but merely the one sent before Him.

John's humility stands out as one of his greatest virtues. He never sought glory for himself but directed all attention to Christ.

The Gospel from Gospel of Luke recounts the joyful birth of John the Baptist. His parents, Zechariah and Elizabeth, had waited many years for a child. When the time comes to name the child, relatives expect him to be called after his father. Instead, Elizabeth insists that his name is John, just as God had instructed.

When Zechariah confirms this name, his speech is immediately restored, and everyone is filled with awe. They ask:

"What, then, will this child be?"

The answer unfolds throughout John's life. He becomes the prophet who prepares the way for the Lord, calling people to repentance and pointing them toward Christ.

The words associated with John's mission beautifully summarize his vocation:

"You, child, shall be called prophet of the Most High; for you will go before the Lord to prepare His ways."

John teaches us that our mission is not to draw attention to ourselves but to help others encounter Jesus. Like John, we are called to be voices that proclaim God's truth, witnesses who reflect His light, and servants who prepare hearts for Christ.

Prayer

Lord God, thank You for the example of Saint John the Baptist. Help me to live faithfully the mission You have entrusted to me. Give me a humble heart that seeks not my own glory but Yours alone. May my words, actions, and example prepare the way for others to encounter Jesus. Like John, may I decrease so that Christ may increase in my life. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
