Holding On to Christ: Faith That Endures Even in Trials
Holding On to Christ: Faith That Endures Even in Trials
First Reading - Acts of the Apostles 7:51-8:1
Responsorial Psalm- Psalm 31: 3-4. 6-8. 17. 21
Alleluia - John 6: 35
Gospel Reading - John 6: 30-35
The readings from Acts 7:51–8:1; Psalm 31; and John 6:30–35 lead us into a profound truth: true faith is revealed not in comfort, but in trials—and it is sustained by Christ, the Bread of Life.
In the Gospel of Gospel of John (6:30–35), the crowd asks Jesus for a sign, recalling how their ancestors received manna in the desert. But Jesus redirects their understanding:
“It was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven; my Father gives you the true bread from heaven.”
Then He makes a powerful declaration:
“I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst.”
This is an invitation to something deeper than physical satisfaction. Jesus offers Himself as the source of true life, strength, and fulfillment. When we are rooted in Him, we find nourishment that sustains us—even in the most difficult moments.
This truth becomes strikingly real in Acts of the Apostles (7:51–8:1), where we witness the martyrdom of Saint Stephen. Full of courage and truth, Stephen speaks boldly, even in the face of fierce opposition. Instead of backing down, he remains faithful until the very end.
As he is being stoned, Stephen entrusts himself to God, echoing words of surrender and forgiveness. His faith does not waver, even in suffering. This is the power of a life deeply rooted in Christ.
Interestingly, this moment of persecution also marks the beginning of a wider mission. The Church is scattered, but the Gospel spreads even further. What seemed like defeat becomes a doorway for growth and expansion.
Psalm 31 captures the heart of this trust:
“Be my rock of refuge… into your hands I commend my spirit.”
It is a prayer of surrender, spoken in times of distress, yet filled with confidence in God’s protection and love. Even when surrounded by hardship, the psalmist chooses trust over fear.
Reflection for Your Life
What do you turn to when life becomes difficult—temporary comfort or Christ, the Bread of Life?
How strong is your faith when you face challenges, opposition, or uncertainty?
Are you willing to trust God, even when you do not understand what is happening?
Faith in Action
Turn to Jesus daily in prayer, especially during difficult moments
Nourish your faith through Scripture and the Word of God
Choose trust and forgiveness, even when it is hard
Christ is enough—even when life is not easy.
Like Stephen, you may face trials. Like the crowd, you may seek signs. But Jesus offers something greater—Himself.
So today, come to Him, believe in Him, and remain in Him—
because only Christ can truly satisfy and sustain your soul.
