A Faithful Heart and a Courageous Witness

Readings:
First Reading - Sirach 47:2–11
Responsorial Psalm - Psalm 18:31. 47. 50–51
Alleluia - Luke 8:15
 Gospel Reading - Mark 6:14–29

Today’s readings present us with two striking figures: King David and John the Baptist. One is remembered for his faith-filled leadership and praise of God; the other for his fearless proclamation of truth. Together, they show us what it means to live with a heart firmly rooted in God—even when it costs us dearly.

A Heart That Belongs to God

In Sirach 47, David is praised not because he was perfect, but because his heart was turned toward God. He gave glory to the Lord through music, worship, and thanksgiving. Even when he sinned, he did not turn away from God but returned in repentance.

David’s life reminds us that God desires a faithful heart more than flawless performance. What matters most is a heart that continually seeks Him.

The Lord Is Our Strength

Psalm 18 proclaims the greatness of God: “Who is God but the Lord?” He is the source of strength, victory, and mercy. The psalmist acknowledges that triumph does not come from human power but from God’s saving hand.

When our lives are anchored in God, praise naturally flows—even in difficult moments.

Bearing Fruit Through Perseverance

In Luke 8:15, Jesus explains that good soil represents those who hear the word, hold it fast with perseverance, and bear fruit. Faithfulness is not proven in comfort but in endurance.

This prepares us for the stark Gospel that follows.

The Cost of Speaking the Truth

In Mark 6, we witness the tragic death of John the Baptist. John spoke the truth boldly, even when it was inconvenient or dangerous. Herod, though intrigued by John, lacked the courage to act rightly. His fear of others and desire to save face led to grave injustice.

John’s death reminds us that faithfulness to God does not always bring applause—but it always bears witness to truth.

Choosing Integrity Over Fear

These readings invite us to ask:

  • Is my heart truly rooted in God, like David’s?

  • Do I praise God not only in joy, but also in struggle?

  • Am I willing to stand for truth, even when it is costly?

Faith grows where courage and perseverance meet. A faithful heart bears fruit—even in silence, even in sacrifice.

Closing Prayer

Lord, give us hearts that seek You faithfully.
Strengthen us to persevere in Your word
and grant us the courage to live in truth,
whatever the cost.
Amen.
