The Word of God today brings us face to face with some of the deepest human experiences: loss, sorrow, desperate prayer, and the healing touch of God. These readings remind us that God is never indifferent to our pain. He hears our cries and enters our suffering with mercy and power.

A Father’s Grief

In 2 Samuel, we encounter one of the most painful moments in King David’s life—the death of his son Absalom. Though Absalom rebelled against him, David’s heart is broken. The king’s grief is so overwhelming that it silences the joy of victory. The people return quietly, ashamed, as though mourning rather than celebrating.

This scene reveals the depth of a father’s love. Even in betrayal, David mourns. His sorrow reflects the anguish that accompanies broken relationships and irreversible loss. Scripture does not rush past this pain—it allows it to be felt.

A Cry From the Heart

Psalm 86 gives words to the suffering soul:
“Turn your ear, O Lord, and answer me; for I am poor and needy.”

This psalm is the prayer of those who have nothing left but trust. It reminds us that God listens attentively to the cry of the afflicted. When grief or fear overwhelms us, prayer becomes our lifeline.

He Took Our Infirmities Upon Himself

In Matthew 8:17, the Gospel declares that Jesus fulfills the prophecy: “He took away our infirmities and bore our diseases.” This single line reveals the compassion of Christ. He does not merely observe suffering—He carries it.

Faith That Reaches Out

In Mark 5, two stories of healing are woven together. Jairus, a synagogue official, pleads for his dying daughter. At the same time, a woman suffering for twelve years reaches out in faith to touch Jesus’ cloak. Both approach Jesus in desperation. Both are met with mercy.

Jesus pauses for the woman, restoring not only her health but her dignity. Then He goes on to raise Jairus’ daughter from death itself. Where others see finality, Jesus brings new life.

From Mourning to Trust

These readings invite us to reflect:

  • Where do I bring my grief and desperation?

  • Do I believe that God truly hears my cry?

  • Am I willing to reach out in faith, even when hope feels distant?

God meets us in silence, sorrow, and fear. He heals, restores, and calls us to trust that no situation is beyond His saving touch.

Closing Prayer

Lord, hear our cry when we are overwhelmed by grief and fear.
Carry our burdens and heal our wounded hearts.
Strengthen our faith to trust in Your power and compassion,
even in moments of loss and uncertainty.
Amen.
