Saint Francis de Sales was born in 1567 in Savoy (modern-day France) into a noble family. Exceptionally intelligent, he received a thorough education in law and theology. Despite expectations that he would pursue a prestigious legal career, Francis felt a persistent call to the priesthood—a call he embraced after much interior struggle and prayer.

Ordained a priest in 1593, he offered his life completely to God, seeking not greatness but faithfulness.
