Weighed and Found Wanting: A Call to Faithfulness in Trials.

Wednesday of the Thirty - Fourth Week in Ordinary Time (Year 1)

First Reading - Daniel 5:1–6, 13–14, 16–17, 23–28;
Responsorial Psalm - Daniel 3:40–45;
Alleluia - Revelation 2:10c;
Gospel Reading - Luke 21:12–19.

The readings today draw us into a sobering, yet hope-filled invitation: to examine our lives, deepen our faithfulness, and stand firm with God no matter the cost. Through the pride of King Belshazzar, the prayer of the three young men in the furnace, and the warning of Jesus to His disciples, we are confronted with the truth that God’s judgment is real, but so is His sustaining grace.

1. The Handwriting on the Wall: Pride That Blindens the Soul (Daniel 5)

Belshazzar’s feast is a dramatic picture of human arrogance at its peak. Even as his kingdom was crumbling, he exalted himself, dishonored God’s holy vessels, and worshipped idols of gold and silver.

Then a mysterious hand appeared, writing the unforgettable words:
“You have been weighed on the scales and found wanting.”

Belshazzar’s sin was not ignorance—Daniel boldly reminds him:

“You knew all this, yet you did not humble your heart.”

This is a mirror for us.

How often do we know better, yet choose comfort over obedience?
How easily do we forget God when things appear secure?
How subtly can pride enter our decisions, our relationships, or even our spiritual life?

The handwriting on the wall is not meant to frighten us but to awaken us. God invites us to examine our hearts before He must.

2. A Prayer That Rises Like Incense (Daniel 3:40–45)

In contrast to Belshazzar’s arrogance, we hear the humble, heartfelt prayer of the three young men in the furnace.
With no temple, no sacrifice, and no visible hope, they offer the only thing they had left:

a contrite spirit and humbled heart.

And God accepted it.

This is the kind of worship that transforms situations.
It is the prayer that emerges from fire—not demanding rescue, but trusting God’s holiness.

When we are faced with trials, uncertainties, or injustices, we too are invited to offer this same sacrifice:

  • Sincerity over outward show

  • Obedience over convenience

  • Surrender over self-reliance

And like the young men, God walks with us in the fire.

3. “Be Faithful Until Death” (Revelation 2:10c)

These words strike our hearts with both weight and promise.

God does not promise a life free of challenges—but He does promise a crown of life to all who persevere.
Faithfulness is not measured in moments of ease but in moments of pressure.

In a world that increasingly opposes truth, holiness, and righteousness, our call remains the same:

Stay faithful. Stay rooted. Stay unafraid.

God sees your struggles.
God sees your perseverance.
And God rewards faithfulness with eternal glory.

4. Standing Firm in the Midst of Opposition (Luke 21:12–19)

Jesus warns His disciples that persecution, betrayal, hatred, and suffering will come. Not as punishment, but as opportunities to witness.

He does not say:
“You might face trials.”
He says:
“You will be hated because of My name.”

Yet He promises two powerful things:

a. “I will give you words and wisdom.”

We are never alone. In our darkest hour, the Holy Spirit speaks through us.

b. “By your perseverance you will secure your lives.”

Not one hair on your head will be lost—not because trials won’t hurt, but because God holds our eternal destiny.

Suffering does not destroy the believer;
it purifies, strengthens, and glorifies God through us.

Bringing It Together: A Life That God Can Weigh and Approve

When the scales of our lives are placed before God, what will He find?

  • Humility or pride?

  • Surrender or self-will?

  • Holiness or compromise?

  • Faithfulness or fear?

The readings call us to a deeper, more authentic walk with God—one that endures trials, rejects pride, and radiates faithfulness in every season.

A Prayer for Today

Lord, weigh us in Your scales and purify our hearts.
Strip away pride, selfishness, and complacency.
Give us a faith that stands firm in trials,
a spirit that remains humble,
and a life that brings You glory.
May we be found faithful—
not fearful, not compromised,
but faithful until the end.
Amen.
