Known by Name, Sent with Purpose

Readings:
First Reading - Acts of the Apostles 11:19-26
Responsorial Psalm- Psalm 87:1-3.4-7
Alleluia - John 10:27
Gospel Reading- John 10:22-30

The readings from Acts 11:19–26; Psalm 87; and John 10:22–30 reveal a powerful identity at the heart of our faith: we are known by Christ, we belong to Him, and we are sent into the world with purpose.

In the Gospel of Gospel of John (10:22–30), Jesus speaks with clarity and assurance:

“My sheep hear my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish.”

This is a promise of deep security. To belong to Christ means to be known, protected, and guided. No force, no fear, no circumstance can snatch us out of His hand. Our identity is rooted not in what we achieve, but in who holds us.

But this identity is not meant to remain hidden—it leads to mission.

In Acts of the Apostles (11:19–26), we see how the early believers, scattered by persecution, begin to preach not only to Jews but also to Greeks. The message of Christ begins to cross boundaries, reaching new hearts and new cultures.

In Antioch, something remarkable happens: a vibrant community forms, full of faith and diversity. When Barnabas arrives, he sees the grace of God at work and encourages them to remain faithful with steadfast hearts.

He later brings Saint Paul the Apostle to help teach and strengthen the community. Together, they nurture a growing Church—and it is here that the disciples are first called “Christians.”

This name is not just a label—it is a calling. To be a Christian means to belong to Christ, reflect His life, and continue His mission.

Psalm 87 celebrates this sense of belonging in a beautiful way:

“Glorious things are said of you, O city of God.”

It speaks of a place where people from different nations are united, all finding their identity in God. This is the vision of the Church—a family gathered from every background, rooted in Christ.

Reflection for Your Life

Do you truly listen for the voice of Christ in your daily life?

Are you living in the security of belonging to Him, or are you still seeking validation elsewhere?

What does it mean for you personally to be called a “Christian”?

Faith in Action

Spend time in prayer, learning to recognize and follow Christ’s voice

Remain faithful in your faith journey, even when it is challenging

Share your faith through your words and actions, wherever you are

You are known by Christ—and that changes everything.

You are not lost, not forgotten, not alone. You are held securely in His hands and called into something greater than yourself.

So today, listen to His voice, walk in His truth, and live your identity boldly—

because you belong to the Good Shepherd.
