The Bible says in Mark 12:30:

“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.”

That includes your physical strength. Let’s explore how your walk with God and your journey to physical wellness can complement and empower each other.

1. The Body-Spirit Connection

God created us as integrated beings—body, soul, and spirit. When one part suffers, the whole person is affected. Think about it: when your body is exhausted or unhealthy, it becomes harder to pray, serve, think clearly, or even worship wholeheartedly.

Likewise, spiritual discouragement can lead to physical neglect. But when we nurture both body and spirit, we walk in a level of wholeness and vitality that reflects God’s design.

1 Thessalonians 5:23 says,

“May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Caring for your body isn’t vanity—it’s stewardship. Strength in your body enables you to run your race of faith with endurance.

2. Physical Discipline Builds Spiritual Endurance

Whether you're training for a marathon or learning to wake up earlier for devotion, one common ingredient is needed: discipline.

Just as a consistent workout builds muscle, consistent time in God’s Word builds faith. Physical training teaches us how to persevere when things get hard, how to stay committed even when we don’t “feel” it, and how to stretch beyond what’s comfortable.

1 Corinthians 9:27 says,

“I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified.”

The self-control you develop physically strengthens your spirit. As you push your body, your faith can deepen too.

The food you eat, the rest you get, and the way you care for your physical well-being all affect your ability to show up for the things God has called you to.

  • Serve your family with love and patience

  • Walk confidently in your calling

  • Think clearly and make wise decisions

  • Resist temptation and stay spiritually alert

You don’t have to be an athlete to honor God with your strength—just be intentional with the health He’s entrusted to you.

4. Strength That Glorifies God

The world often promotes strength as a way to show off or dominate. But Kingdom strength is different. It’s humble, purposeful, and submitted to God’s will.

Isaiah 40:31 reminds us that:

“But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”

Your strength—whether physical or spiritual—comes from the Lord. When you train your body, do it with a heart of worship. Let every workout, every healthy meal, every step of discipline be an offering to God. Make it your goal not to glorify yourself, but to be fit for the assignment He’s given you.

5. Practical Ways to Grow in Both Strengths

  • Start your day with prayer and movement – stretch, walk, or do a light workout while listening to worship music.

  • Set weekly goals – spiritually (devotions, Scripture reading) and physically (exercise, water intake).

  • Rest well – rest is not weakness; it’s worship. Prioritize sleep and Sabbath rhythms.

  • Pair your routines – listen to the Bible or sermons during your workouts.

  • Invite God into your fitness journey – ask for strength, motivation, and grace.
