Formed by Poverty, Strengthened by Faith Saint John Bosco was born in 1815 in a poor farming family in Becchi, Italy. He lost his father at a young age, and from early childhood learned the value of hard work, perseverance, and prayer. Guided by a devout mother, Mamma Margaret , John grew in faith and compassion, especially for poor and neglected children. Even as a boy, John sensed God’s call to serve the young—a calling revealed through prophetic dreams that would guide his entire mission.
